Sometimes the best adventures happen on a whim. We are big fan’s of Governor’s Island so when we had the chance to step back in time and attend the annual Jazz Age Lawn Party got out our pearls and ran!
For the past 10 years, some of the most spirited and fashionable New Yorkers trek to Governor’s Island to celebrate the art and music from the 1920’s and 30’s at Michael Arenella’s annual Jazz Age Lawn Party. This year was no different. Despite the 100 degree temps, dapper gents and swish gals donned their garb and jumped on the ferry for a day of dancing, drinking and revelry. Sunny and I went along for the ride….minus the drinking!
The event takes place every year on the 2nd weekend in June and the 2nd weekend in August. Tickets are a little pricey but it does provide a full day of unique fun.
It was a fun opportunity to play dress up (shout out to my local dollar store!) and experience music from artists like Michael Arenella & The Dreamland Orchestra, Queen Esther and Gregory Moore & the Dreamland Follies. There are lots of different vendors including some unique vintage posts and a old time photo set up. And let’s not forget the dance contests – Sunny watched the Charleston dance contest and learned quite quickly that dancing doesn’t run in the Barkan genes.
On a food note there were lots of goodies including ice cream from the uber creative experimental ice cream shop Ice & Vice. That said, next year I will bring more safe snacks that I know are sure things for Sunny to avoid any potential meltdowns.
Overall – an awesome event with a little bit of learning built in!
